Salvage of sewage truck from Great Mackerel Beach, Pittwater NSW
Sea Service Diving and Marine were appointed as the sole dive team to assist in the salvage of a sewage truck and barge that overturned and landed on the seabed of the water off Great Mackerel Beach, Pittwater on 21 August 2019.
The high profile project reported by Seven News Sydney on 13 September 2019 required great attention to detail and the guidance of Sea Services’ skilled expertise to ensure the truck filled with approximately 10,000 litres of sewage remained intact during the salvage. Should any of the sewage have been exposed to the waters, it would have caused significant damage to the marine wildlife in Pittwater for years to come.
Sea Service Diving and Marine senior divers attached two chain slings to the front and back of the truck allowing it to be lifted level and stable from the water, not compromising the integity of the sewage tank.
As reported and quoted on the AFLOAT website, Transport for NSW Acting Director NSW Maritime Mark Hutchings spoke praise of how well the project was executed.
“A well-crafted salvage plan with appropriate marine pollution response equipment and trained specialist staff on site has ensured the optimum result.
“The salvage team appointed by the barge owner and insurer, overseen by NSW Maritime, has done a great job. Slow and steady has won the race.”
